All our programs are online and part-time. Expect to spend about 15-20 hours a week within your program. You can learn and practice at any time — just follow the curriculum on our coding platform. We also organize live workshops, Q&As, and co-working sessions, which usually take place on the weekends, and offer opportunities to participate in group projects, hackathons, and externships throughout your studies.
No. Just 13% of our students came to us with a background in STEM. Our programs are beginner-friendly and don’t require any prior knowledge of coding or a tech industry background. We dedicate hours of support to our students, helping them get through the challenges of learning a new profession. All you need is motivation and grit — we’ll provide everything else.
Our programs are part-time in order to provide a balance of structure and flexibility. This is why our students come from all walks of life: retail workers, nurses, teachers, mechanical engineers, stay-at-home parents, college students, and other diverse backgrounds and occupations.
There are no barriers to joining Update My Skill. The only requirements are grit, motivation, and about 20 hours per week. We do ask all students to have a call with an advisor first so that they can find out everything they need to know about the profession and our program before committing.
Yes, we will send you a certificate when you complete your program.

Study and practice on your schedule — everything you need is provided on our online learning platform. Our guidance team is online for most of the day and the tech support team is online 24/7. They are available to ensure you have all you need to meet sprint deadlines.
Learning Process
You won’t need any special equipment, just a stable internet connection, and a computer.
All of your lessons and practice at Update My Skill take place in the same browser window on our platform. This includes concepts, skill practice, and theory. We find that this helps Update My Skill students focus and learn new skills more easily. If you’ve ever had to click between different windows (e.g. a code editor, a PDF assignment, and a lecture video) to complete a single task, you know how distracting it can be.
Instant feedback. You’ll know if your code works immediately, with real-time feedback from the platform. We also have our support team online 24/7 to help resolve any issues.
Update My Skill is a thriving online community. You’re always supported by a full complement of tutors, senior students, community managers, code reviewers, career coaches, and tech support folks.

Tutors host live webinars, workshops, and Q&A sessions every week. They also hold live office hours on Discord. These help students prepare for the more challenging parts of their learning process, like the projects. You can always get a quick help on Discord if you’re stuck, or book an in-depth 1:1 session to help you untangle.
You will have regular one-on-one meetings with a tutor. Tutors also hold office hours every week, where students can get a quick reply to their questions in Discord or in Zoom.
Code review is a part of every coding profession, as your code is always being reviewed by peers before it gets added to a production codebase. It is when coding professionals check the projects that students deliver every 2-3 weeks (i.e. every sprint). A code reviewer goes over every project line-by-line. Instead of grading your project, the code reviewer helps you improve it through several iterations. Once bugs have been fixed and the project is up to industry/professional standard, the reviewer accepts it, and you can move on to the next one. They share also their expertise, advice on how to write better code, and help analyze mistakes.
After you submit your project for review, allow up to 24 hours to receive feedback from a code reviewer.

While all projects need to be completed, we provide a robust support network to help you catch up if life happens and you fall behind.
If you feel like you can’t meet a deadline, you can reach out and ask for an extension or additional help from community managers and tutors. There will always be someone to help you.
We understand that sometimes life can be less than smooth. If necessary, students have the option of taking a break during the program. They can then come back and continue right where they left off — at no additional cost.

Students can also do an unlimited number of externship projects — freelance projects with team lead guidance — for real companies.
Usually students do up to 2-3 externships projects during their time with Update My Skill, receiving feedback from teams working in the real world. However, there is no limit to how many you can take on after graduation. Learn more about Update My Skill Externships.
Yes, you’ll be able to join a group working on an externship project for one of Update My Skill partner companies. Students can boost their LinkedIn profiles and impress future employers with relevant projects and reviews. These partnerships create opportunities for our students to boost their portfolios and contribute to important causes. They have created websites related to climate change, sustainability, mental health, and LGBTQ+ matters.

Our curriculum is constantly updated, based on employers’ requirements and expertise from the field. All content is divided into small portions and layered with practice segments. Thus, you’re always consolidating what you’re learning, turning concepts into practiced skills. We are also continually using student feedback, learning data, and cutting-edge educational techniques to improve the content. The Update My Skill learning platform is designed to help us understand where students get stuck.
Update My Skill uses both Cognitive Feasibility (CF) and Learning Performance (LP) dashboards for a) optimizing overly difficult tasks, lessons, and courses, and b) highlighting at-risk students.
We also regularly survey students regarding their experience with specific parts of the program.

Update My Skill mission is to get you a job you’ll love. That involves a lot more than “just” learning to code or analyze data. Learning the skills only gets you halfway — learning how to get hired is just as important.
This is where the Update My Skill career services package comes in. We’ll prepare you for your job search and support you during the job hunt. Here’s how:
- You’ll learn how to write a compelling resume and cover letter, which will be reviewed by experienced career coaches. HR professionals.
- You’ll graduate with a show-stopping portfolio of real-life projects. Your Update My Skill projects will be professionally reviewed line-by-line, while your externship projects will be coded with feedback from our employer partners. - We’ll help you present your best self in tech and HR interviews. Career coaches and tech industry leads will take you through a series of mock interviews where you will be able to master your interviewing skills.

As a career team, we’re thrilled to offer our graduates post-offer support through career services, designed to help them succeed in the tech industry. Students can utilize three career coaching sessions per year, depending on their needs:
- If they’ve recently transitioned into a new role.
- If, at any point, they decide to return to the job search, we’ll be more than happy to set them up for success by providing career advice and reviewing their career materials.
All career and job search services are included in your Update My Skill curriculum. There are no additional fees.
Yes, you will attend individual coaching sessions with our rockstar career coaches and talent acquisition professionals with recruiting and hiring experience, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small startups.
You’ll do at least two one-on-ones with our career coach. If you need more sessions to get your professional brand and job search strategy figured out, we’re happy to schedule more.
For the Software Engineering Bootcamp, aside from ongoing coaching in acceleration, we also have AMA (aka open hours with a coach) on a weekly basis — so it’s unlimited coaching support.
They’re like regular job interviews, which is the point. Mock interviews are based on real technical section interviews.
Knowing how to answer typical interview questions and solve tasks are skills. Professional feedback enables you to practice and rapidly perfect these skills. Going through the process in a low-stakes environment will also help you feel more confident going into real interviews.

We want all of our students to be confident that they’ve made the right choice. Students can withdraw with a full refund, up to 2 weeks after their bootcamp start date.
After 2 weeks have passed, you can still withdraw for a partial refund, up to halfway through your program. For more details and the refund schedule, check out our Terms and Conditions. They’re pretty straightforward and transparent.
After receiving a refund request, we will contact you within three business days to confirm the refund amount. Once confirmed, refunds may take up to 30 calendar days, depending on the payment system.
